Touch-Up Appointments After Permanent Makeup Done Elsewhere: When a “Top-Up” Becomes a Redesign

If you’ve had permanent makeup before (brows, lips, eyeliner) and you’re now looking for a “top-up,” a permanent makeup “touch-up”, you’re not alone. It’s a very common request.
But here’s the honest truth: what looks like a simple refresh on the booking form often turns into something more like a careful redesign.

The most common permanent makeup touchup scenario I see

A client comes in asking for a top-up because their previous work has faded. They’re hoping we can simply “go over it” and bring the colour back.
When we look closely together, we often find that the original treatment needs more than added pigment. Common issues include:
Shape that no longer suits the face (or never really did)
Placement that sits too high, too low, too close, or too far apart
Asymmetry that becomes more noticeable over time
Unnatural colour shifts (for example: brows pulling grey, blue, red, or overly warm)
Old pigment that has spread slightly or healed too solid
In these cases, a true “top-up” can actually lock in the problems.
A better outcome usually comes from stepping back and asking: What do we want the end result to be? Then we build a plan that gets you there.
Why old permanent makeup redesign and correction matters
Permanent makeup isn’t like applying makeup on top of makeup. We’re working with what’s already in the skin.
That means success often depends on:
What pigment is already present (and how it has healed)
How your skin holds colour now (which can change with age, hormones, medication, and skincare)
Whether we need to neutralise or correct colour before we can refine shape
Whether a gradual approach will give a more natural finish than trying to “fix everything” in one go
Sometimes we can achieve a beautiful correction and refresh in one application. Other times, the safest and most natural-looking route is staged.
The approach to correcting old microblading or lip blush tattoo that gets the best results
When someone comes to me after treatment elsewhere, the goal is never to criticise the previous technician. It’s to understand what’s in your skin and what you want going forward.
The best outcomes come from three things:
Careful listening
Your preferences matter: soft vs defined, natural vs makeup look, subtle warmth vs cooler tones, and how you want to feel day-to-day.
Individualised planning
There is no one-size-fits-all technique. The right plan depends on your skin, your existing pigment, your lifestyle, and your personal style.
A flexible, un-pressurising process
I keep the process collaborative and calm. You’re involved at every stage, and we adjust as needed. Creativity and the best results require open communication and adaptability.
How long do results last after a permanent eyebrows and lips correction or redesign?
Longevity varies, but when the plan is right and the skin responds well, results can be beautifully long-lasting.
In many cases, clients enjoy their results for up to 14 months after one application.
In rare cases, pigment can last 2 years, and occasionally even up to 4 years.
That said, permanent makeup is always a partnership between the work we do in the clinic and what happens afterwards.
What affects your final result (and how it heals)
Positive outcomes depend on a combination of factors, including:
Skin type (oily, dry, mature, sensitive, thin, sun-damaged)
Aftercare (how closely it’s followed in the first couple of weeks)
Lifestyle (sun exposure, sweating, swimming, skincare acids/retinoids)
Personal style (subtle and natural vs more defined)
Realistic expectations (what’s possible over existing work)
Current skin health, how many sessions/ applications have been carried out
The depth of previous application/s
Even with the best technique, no practitioner can guarantee identical results for every client, because every skin heals differently.
What to expect if you’re booking a “top-up” after work elsewhere
Here’s what I recommend:
Come in open-minded: you may still get a simple refresh, but you may also benefit from a redesign.
Be ready to talk about what you like and don’t like (shape, colour, intensity).
Expect honest guidance. If I believe your best result needs a different approach, I’ll explain why.
A final word
If your previous permanent makeup doesn’t feel like “you” anymore, that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it. With careful listening, experienced correction work, and a flexible plan, it’s often possible to create something softer, more balanced, and genuinely beautiful.
If you’re considering a touch-up after treatment elsewhere, book in for an assessment so we can look at your existing pigment, talk through your goals, and choose the safest path to the result you actually want.
